Gregynog is internationally famous as the former home of renowned art collectors, public benefactors and sisters, Gwendoline and Margaret Davies, whose social, political and cultural influence was felt across the world in the 20th century. Committed to peace and progress, ‘Gwen and Daisy’ shared the ambition for everyone to benefit from engagement with and access to Wales’ rich culture and outstanding environment. This ambition remains the beating heart of Gregynog today.
Gregynog Hall, and its 750acre estate, has since 2019 been owned by Gregynog Trust a registered charity. The Grade II* listed hall and Grade I listed gardens sit within an extensive landscape setting, at the heart of rural mid-Wales. The Hall and estate, including agricultural land, woodland, National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), offer a welcoming setting for everyone to stay, discover, experience and be inspired. It is a place where magic happens and where the Trust aims to create Wales’ most welcoming home for creativity, nature and the arts.
Our 750acre estate is managed for nature recovery and public access, while the Hall provides 58 bedrooms for educational residential and day conferences, and access to our special library and archives. The Trust’s purpose echoes the Davies sisters’ vision and we are committed to safeguarding this magical place for future generations. We need your help to do so and we are asking everyone that loves Gregynog to help us achieve our aims by first Raising the Roof!
Lack of repair and maintenance prior to Trust ownership from 2019, has left a challenging legacy of decline and professional inspections demonstrate the roof requires urgent renewal. This outstanding heritage asset faces further dereliction and risk of closure, hindering income generation, refurbishment, and the sustainability of the Trust. Refurbishing the Hall and ‘Raising the Roof!’ is the first step in securing this magical place and unlocking its wider potential.
We have appointed Buttress Architects to assist us with the project, following our successful bid to the Architectural Heritage Fund for phase one support. We are now working with the Heritage Lottery Fund and other Trust funds to develop our fundraising strategy and reach our £4.6m target. We aim to raise £25,000 from public fundraising and every single penny donated will help us reach the Raise the Roof! target.
We wish to build on our success in attracting funds from the Levelling Up programme and our Come Home to Nature Project – via the Nature Network Fund grant – allowing us to enhance our nature reserve for better access as well as run a series of free events from wildlife activities with Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust to Saturday morning concerts with Ensemble Cymru – look out for donation boxes at these events, in the hall and our café.
This is a very big and ambitious project, likely to take three to four years so please keep an eye out on our social media, sign up to our mailing list via our website we’ll keep you up to date on progress every step of the way.
